Exclusive: Do Make Say Think Dish On Upcoming Album's Departures, Announce North American Tour
Published Aug 18, 2009While gearing up for a busy tour later this fall, Do Make Say Think founder/Years front-man Ohad Benchetrit recently revealed details about Other Truths, the highly anticipated new record by DMST due out via Constellation Records on October 20.
According to Benchetrit, the now completed Other Truths marks a kind of departure from the approach of DMST albums like 2007's acclaimed You, You're a History in Rust. "I think what this record is, is a more relaxed idea of what we've become," he told Exclaim! in an interview. "We've kind of settled into who we are after five records and 12 years. So, for this one, we just got into a room and said, 'Okay, if we don't push ourselves or over-think it, what just comes out of us naturally? What do we just do?'
"So, it's more the core idea of what the band has been the entire time, as opposed to the fringe elements we're always pushing and pulling to try and stretch into new territory. Instead of doing that, this is more of a relaxed record."
The band will likely be road-testing material from Other Truths at upcoming one-off shows in Toronto on Wednesday (August 19) and in New York on September 10, before embarking on an upcoming tour this November, which includes sets by a couple of DMST members' solo endeavours. Charles Spearin's Happiness Project will be in full effect and audiences will also witness the first out-of-town shows for Benchetrit's ambient work in Years.
How does he plan to bring the multi-faceted, audio experimentation of Years to life on-stage? "Well, I'm still kinda working on that," Benchetrit chuckles. "The beautiful thing about this tour with Do Makes and the Happiness Project is that, a lot of those people were involved with Years. So, it's not going to be a one-man show per se but it will still be different than Do Makes."
