BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 7, 2013

HBO series Boardwalk Empire is set against the backdrop of Prohibition-era Atlantic City, and the organizers have recruited some notable artists for a soundtrack that aims to capture the retro feel of the '20s and '30s. Boardwalk Empire Volume 2: Music from the HBO Original Series is out on September 3 through ABKCO.

The album features an array of period songs. Among the modern artists who sing them are Elvis Costello, St. Vincent, Patti Smith, Neko Case, the National's Matt Berninger, Rufus Wainwright, Loudon Wainwright III, Karen Elson and Pokey LaFarge. Big band revivalists Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks serve as the backing musicians on every song.
