Dreaming Dead Within One

Dreaming Dead Within One
Many bands strive to amalgamate the eerie intensity of black metal with the technical wizardry and guttural attack of thrash. Generally speaking, the end result feels like a muddled mess of confusion and cacophony. However, when it comes to Los Angeles' Dreaming Dead (formerly known as Manslaughter) and debut full-length Within One, the ratio of evil to attitude is surprisingly equal. Fresh and energetic while still channelling the spirits of scene originators such as Coroner and Death, as interpreted by Obituary, the album ravages with a spirited anger and driven musical prowess. Even overly elongated songs such as "Putrid Is The Sky" and "Manslaughter" are inspired bouts of cryptic atmosphere and frenzied instrumentation despite their longwinded-ness. A remarkable debut, Within One kicks open the doors of fused metallic sub-genres and cuts a wide swath for the future. (Ibex Moon Records)
