Re-Edutainment

BY Thomas QuinlanPublished Jul 1, 2005

More than three hours in length and spread out over three discs, Re-Edutainment is a well-blended, 60 song mix of mid-’90s, golden age-era hip-hop. A few hits make the cut, like Method Man’s "PLO Style” and A Tribe Called Quest’s "Scenario,” both in remix versions, but these are rare among the unreleased Mobb Deep songs and slept on diss tracks to artists like DMX, Tupac and Nas. There are tracks from the expected likes of Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem, but there’s even some shine given to the underdog’s like Jemini, Crustified Dibbs (aka R.A. the Rugged Man) and Whooliganz (Alchemist’s teenaged-era rap group). Neoteric is a subtle mixer, blending his surprisingly good choices without the bothersome use of juggling or overbearing cuts, and allows a song to play from start to finish. There’s nothing showy about this epic mix-tape, just great hip-hop from verse to verse, song to song, and disc to disc. Re-Edutainment is both fun and educational.
