Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman Prepping Solo Album, Working with John Cale

Amber Coffman is best known for joining forces with David Longstreth in Dirty Projectors, but the singer will be striking out on her own by releasing a solo record. While the details are not yet confirmed, she spoke about her plans with Andy Beckerman for his Beginnings podcast.

"I've always wanted to make a solo record, and last fall and winter I started getting more serious about it," Coffman explained.

She's working on the record in Los Angeles, having recently moved there from her prior home base in New York.

Coffman noted that Dirty Projectors have never written an album in New York City, since they've always left the Big Apple when recording. "I came out of a really long relationship and everything felt very transitional and kind of raw and crazy," she said. "There were so many reasons why it made sense for me to come out here [Los Angeles]. A lot of the people I'm working with are out here."

Two weeks ago, Coffman shared a photo of herself with John Cale, noting that the two had been recording together. It's not clear in what capacity the two are collaborating.

Listen to Coffman's Beginnings interview below. The conversation lasts for almost an hour and a half in total.

Coffman noted on Twitter that, despite the cross-country move, she is still a member of Dirty Projectors.
