Die Antwoord Slated to Star in Sci-Fi Comedy by 'District 9' Director

Die Antwoord have given us some of the weirdest and most disturbing music videos of the past few years, so we're a little apprehensive to learn that the South African shock-rap duo will apparently be starring in a feature-length film.

The Playlist reports that the duo will be playing themselves in lead roles in the upcoming Chappie. This sci-fi comedy is being helmed by Neill Blomkamp, who is best known for directing 2009's District 9.

Band member Ninja told the South African paper Die Burger that the film's budget was around $50 million, while Blomkamp confirmed that prep work on Chappie has begun, with filming slated to take place in Johannesburg starting in September.

Blomkamp previously told The Playlist, "It's like a fundamentally more simple story, a comedy, a heartfelt story, in a science fiction setting. And it's fucking hilarious, it's a really cool film. I can say that with confidence... It's a smaller film, a more esoteric one."

Chappie. is being backed by Media Rights Capital and features a script co-written by Blomkamp and his wife Terri Tatchel. Post-production will take place in Vancouver.
