The highly anticipated supervillain flick Suicide Squad raked in record-breaking millions and abysmal reviews in its opening weekend, but now the film's director has drawn the ire of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord too.
The group's Yolandi Visser lashed out at filmmaker David Ayer in an Instagram video, with the caption: "yes David Ayer, u jockin' our style."
She accuses the director of taking inspiration for the movie from Die Antwoord's style, specifically calling him out for ripping off the opening sequence to their Harmony Korine-directed "Umshini Wam."
Visser also notes that cast members Cara Delivigne and Jared Leto told her that Ayer frequently talked about Die Antwoord on set, but never formally "asked our permission to rip us off."
Giving Ayer the benefit of the doubt that the whole thing was a misunderstanding, Visser's bandmate Ninja accepted an invite to the movie's premiere. She details a "fake" exchange of pleasantries between Ninja and Ayer (during which the Die Antwoord member felt forced to act friendly for the sake of his wife and kid in attendance), then adds the icing on top of cake: "Den poor ninja had to sit thru dat hole bullshit movie."
The video itself features a number of side-by-side images of Die Antwoord's Ninja and Jared Leto's Joker character, as well as Visser herself next to images of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. It's soundtracked not so subtly by Craig Mack's "Jockin' My Style," and ends with a particularly poignant faceplant and farting noise.
