I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams

The knife jammed through the fistful of dollars on the cover of Diarrhea Planet's latest should give newcomers a pretty strong sense of what's in store. The Nashville sextet toil in the same garage rock circles as many of their Infinity Cat peers, making big rock records at rock-bottom prices. I'm Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams ups the ante, at least in terms of songwriting ambition. While the thundering rhythm section recalls contemporaries like California X, there are touches of Motörhead, NWOBHM and even some Sunset Strip sleaze thrown in (it's impossible to hear the spoken word shout-out in "Emmett's Vision" and not recall Axl calling out haters on "Get in the Ring"), with the band's four guitarists swapping licks throughout. It's easy to imagine these songs filling concert halls, or even stadiums, instead of the dive bars and basements the band usually haunt. However, as the cover suggests, that sort of careerist ambition just isn't in the cards for Diarrhea Planet, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is one of the most fun albums to emerge from the underground in a while. Don't miss out.
