Deerhoof Announce New Album, Song Arranging Contest

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Jun 4, 2008

After weeks of online rumours, Deerhoof have finally given the official word on their new full-length. Titled Offend Maggie, the album by the delightfully wacky San Francisco quartet will hit October 7 via the band’s longtime home, Kill Rock Stars, and will mark the band’s first record since 2007’s widely applauded Friend Opportunity.

And while October may seem a long way off, Deerhoof are planning to get their Maggie wheel rolling shortly with a novel new stab at fan participation. Here’s the plan: via a new interactive website one song from the forthcoming album will be posted online, not predictably as an MP3, but as a downloadable written score minus any audio. Fans, foes or simply people with too much time on their hands are then encouraged to take the score, record their interpretation and then share their recording with others on the Deerhoof website.

The band haven’t said which song it will be, but on the album’s release date (or whenever it leaks), everyone can hear Deerhoof’s take on the song, then compare, critique and enjoy.

So what is the point of this whole score project? Well, to have fun obviously.

Further details on the project, such as the start date and web address, are expected to be announced shortly, but in the meantime, here is the Offend Maggie tracklisting, as well as Deerhoof’s upcoming tour dates.
