The Deep Dark Woods

Island Stage, Guelph ON July 27

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 30, 2012

Closing out the Island Stage on what turned out to be a rainy first night of the festival, Saskatoon alt-country favourites the Deep Dark Woods brought their rootsy music to an already won-over audience. Fitting right in with the festival crowd a plaid shirt and beard, vocalist/guitarist Ryan Boldt led the band through a warm-sounding set, despite the group's tendency to deliver a gloomier side of folk music. Competing schedule-wise with a Main Stage headlining set from Arkells, the Deep Dark Woods provided a gorgeous, if mellow, alternative and sent onlookers off into the night ready for a second day of Hillside.
