Tool Could "Maybe Knock Out Another EP" While Not Touring, Says Drummer Danny Carey

"We need to get the lead out and start functioning"

Last month, Tool were forced to cancel their North American tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the prospect of even more time off the road has drummer Danny Carey itching to get back behind the drums — for a new Tool EP, perhaps.

As The PRP points out, Carey recently spoke about what the rest of 2020 could hold for Tool in conversation with Skinny Puppy's Cevin Key. You can find the pair's "Sunday Live Chat" in the player below.

"Tool hasn't been jamming," Carey explained. "We've been just kind [of] on hiatus. Nothing's really been happening. But I think it's time. We kept hoping that we were going to get back out, so we were just kind of, 'Hey, enjoy this while it lasts.' But now it's looking like it could go to the rest of the year, so we need to get the lead out and start functioning. Maybe knock out another EP, at least, or something like that."

On the subject of shorter releases — shorter than the 86-minute Fear Inoculum, at any rate — Carey added, "We've never really [recorded an EP] since our first release...so I thought it would be kind of nice to do something like that. We don't have a record deal anymore — we're free agents — so we can kind of release whatever we want to release now, which is a good feeling."

Elsewhere in the chat, Carey underscored that Tool were about to "start the biggest American tour we've ever done. So that was a heartbreaker when all that hit the fan. So we're just kind of in suspension now. We have dates held in November and December, but it's highly unlikely… to pan out."

Last year, Carey spoke to "tons of material" Tool had for a follow-up to Fear Inoculum, saying "It's not going to take 12 years, or if it does, I'll probably be so old I probably can't pick up my sticks any more! But my hope is we'll do another record and just keep moving forward."

In May, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan turned his attention back towards his Puscifer project with single "Apocalyptical." That same month saw Carey pop up on a song with Daniel Romano's Outfit.
