Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Treat 'Déjà Vu' to 50th Anniversary Reissue

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's revered album Déjà Vu turned 50 last year, and the milestone will be celebrated with a new expanded reissue.

Arriving May 14 through Rhino, the expanded Déjà Vu will arrive in 5-LP and 4-CD/1-LP versions, collecting the original record alongside unreleased demos, outtakes and alternate takes.

The new set's design replicates the original pressing's hardcover, leather-like sleeve and will also include a book featuring rare photos and liner notes by Cameron Crowe. Both versions are now available for pre-order.

Today's news arrives alongside an unreleased demo of Neil Young's "Birds," which would appear on his celebrated solo effort After the Gold Rush months after Déjà Vu's release. As you'll hear, this particular demo features Graham Nash, who asks Young at the outset, "Are you sure you're completely in tune?"

"I know it's just me and Neil doing it with his acoustic guitar, but that's a beautiful piece of music," Nash told Rolling Stone of the demo. "It's me trying to be the best harmony singer I can be with somebody of the stature of Neil Young. I don't want to stick out singing extra words that he's not singing. I have to be on my game. And 'Birds' is a perfect example of that."

Nash continued: "When you just listen to Déjà Vu and you appreciate it, you have no idea what went into the making of the record. This release will give you a great idea of how this record came together. We were all four strong writers. We were all four strong singers. I don't believe there's a band in the world with four writers and four singers. And don't forget, we may be the only original band that's still around. The Beach Boys and the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones aren't the original bands. Carl Wilson died and Brian Jones died. But the four of us are still rocking, and it's kind of interesting."

In 2017, Young felt that a CSNY reunion was not out of the question, though Nash made it clear he was "done" with the group a year prior.
