Clara Venice Experiments with 72 Instruments on New 'Electric Dream' EP

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 3, 2015

If you're not totally familiar with the theremin, Canadian musician Clara Venice could teach you a thing or two about it — and 71 other instruments. The electronic-pop singer and multi-instrumentalist has just announced plans for a new EP, and it hears Venice experimenting with a whopping 72 musical toys.

Titled Electric Dream, the four-song EP marks will arrive in October and marks the singer's second release.

Described in a press release as a "high fantasy, modern fairytale" that spins stories of "spacey love connections," the album originated during Venice's time with the Artist in Residency program at the National Music Centre in Calgary. Given access to an extensive collection of historical and modern recording equipment, she sought to include as many different instruments as possible.

A Stylophone (a pocket synthesizer controlled by a stylus) and Buchla Lightning II all made the final cut. Also included were a slew of the musician's usual tools like the Theremini, electric violin, guitar, ukulele and glockenspiel.

Below, you can watch a trailer for the forthcoming EP, which includes dramatized footage of the recording process and features a snippet of the ethereal, out-of-this-world pop music that will appear on the record. Scroll past Venice's upcoming live shows to give it a watch.
