Christopher Walken Told Will Ferrell That the "More Cowbell" Sketch Ruined His Life

In April of 2000, Saturday Night Live dropped a sketch that featured Christopher Walken, Will Ferrell and an extra-giggly Jimmy Fallon. Ostensibly, it was a sketch about Blue Öyster Cult, but really it was all about one phrase: "More cowbell." The line has become so ubiquitous that Walken now says it ruined his life.

Ferrell, who will return to host SNL this week, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (November 21), when he revealed that Walken is still haunted by the catchphrase.

"Here's the crazy thing," Ferrell said. "Years later, I go to see Christopher Walken in a play, I say hello to him backstage and he's like, 'You know, you've ruined my life. People, during the curtain call, bring cowbells and ring them. The other day, I went for an Italian food lunch, and the waiter asked if I wanted more cowbell with my pasta bolognese.'"

"I think he was really mad at me," Ferrell said, then admitting that Walken "had a little smile" while he explained it.

Of course, the "more cowbell" line has been beaten to death so profoundly that one could argue it didn't just ruin Walken's life but was in fact bad for all of society as a whole.
