Christina Aguilera Got Rejected by a New Orleans Bar Band to Join Them Onstage Because They Didn't Know Who She Was
And fair enough
Aguilera — who you may or may not remember from such bygone hits as "Genie in a Bottle" and "Dirrty" — approached a local bar band named Claude Bryant and the All Stars at Cafe Negril in New Orleans last Thursday (November 8), asking the group if she could sing with them onstage. But things then quickly took an awkward turn.
As you can see in the Twitter video down below, Aguilera approached frontman Claude Bryant to make the request to join them, but she can then be heard saying, "You don't want that? Oh, it's okay. I don't have to sing."
As Billboard reports, the band apparently play the bar every Thursday, and Aguilera was there before her show the next night at the city's Saenger Theater as part of her Liberation tour.
My wife is in New Orleans and last night at the bar she was at, comes in @xtina!!! She asked the house band if she can sing a tune and... Nope! As if she was denied?! That would have been so cool to see her sing. More to the story Christina? pic.twitter.com/NoWTwkYfyL— drMediaPro (@drMediaPro) November 9, 2018
At her show, she recounted the encounter and told the crowd the following:
I go to this little bar and there's this live band playing, and I was with a couple of my dancers and I was just like, "Let me just get up on stage and jam with this guy. Maybe I'll sing a song or whatever and be fun." He would not give me the mic. He was, like, a little older and he was just like, he was not feeling it. He was not gonna give up his mic. I was like, "Oh, I just want to come just let me come up," and he just said, "What, are you gonna dance for me?" I was like, "No, I just want to sing a song with you."
So I was like, "Okay I'll just save it for tomorrow, then." It's all right. It's all good. He was like, "Don't hurt yourself!" I was like, okay. This is just — you're not feeling me. It's okay. I'm just gonna depart ways. Be on my little merry way. Find somewhere else to go.
Bryant later told WGNO that it was all because he simply didn't recognize who she was.
"I'm sorry, Christina. I just didn't recognize you! I didn't recognize her because she had a cap over here head and over her eyes," he said. "She was in a jersey. She didn't introduce herself to me. I asked her if she wanted to dance and she said that she wanted to sing. I started playing the beginning riff of the song, 'No, No, No' by Bob Marley, but then her bodyguard picked her up off the stage and she left."
And really, it's hard to blame him.
