Chilly Gonzales is getting extra festive this year and has announced his very own Christmas album. Called A very chilly christmas, the record will arrive on November 13 via Evergreen, and it features a pair of high-profile collaborators.
Lending a hand will be Feist and Jarvis Cocker, who will help cover "Snow Is Falling in Manhattan" by late Silver Jews frontman David Berman, who wrote the song for his Purple Mountains album. Feist will also appear on the track "The Banister Bough" — the only original song on the yuletide effort.
According to a press release, "From feudal oldies to newer holiday pop canon, A very chilly christmas surveys a broad scope of seasonal repertoire and sentiment. There's grandeur and solemnity, there's austerity and merriment, and there's Mariah Carey."
In a statement, Gonzales himself said, "Christmas is a time of very mixed intense emotion for me, and the existing canon often sounds like a forced smile. Christmas is a typical time for superficial happiness, but also a time for reflection and mourning the sad events throughout the year, and to play the songs in a minor key makes Christmas more authentic and realistic."
As for that Gonzales original with Feist, it's described like this:
A very chilly christmas finds its star in The Banister Bough, the album's sole original song. This tinseled, sugar-plum collaboration with Feist balances delicate whimsy with an ecological message in disguise as a home decorating tutorial. The song gently encourages us to reimagine traditions, those we claim and those we inherit, for the generations to come.
His rendition of "Silent Night" will arrive tomorrow (November 6), and you can pre-save it. For now, you can check out an album trailer below, where you'll also find the tracklist.
