In January 2020, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith confirmed that the band were set to write a new album following John Frusciante's 2019 return to the fold. Now, Smith has shared that work continues on the "exciting" new material this year.

In conversation with New York's Q104.3, Smith was asked about what the next few months will hold for RHCP as North American tours continue to be launched in the wake of COVID-19 vaccine rollouts in the United States.

However, the drummer wasn't quick to give up any crucial details, explaining, "There's a gag order on me. I do so many Zooms [video interviews], and they're, like, 'Why'd you say that?'"

Smith did confirm that "there's something coming. I can say this: we're making a record, we're making new music, and it's very exciting."

The drummer added: "I don't know when it's coming out, but we can't wait for people to hear it, and we can't wait to perform for people. Just like everybody else that really misses that experience."

Smith's comments come following a recent change in band management. In April, it was reported that the Red Hot Chili Peppers went separate ways with Q Prime last fall after over 20 years together, leading them to sign with Guy Oseary.

Last October, Frusciante shared that the pandemic had interrupted rehearsal plans, allowing the band to focus on writing new material. At the time, he shared that his reunion with RHCP was like "returning to family."

Smith and Frusciante have also recently contributed to pair of tribute albums, paying homage to Metallica and Gang of Four, respectively. Red Hot Chili Peppers' most recent album remains 2016's The Getaway.
