With only a couple of records under her belt, and not exactly setting records with her pace, it seems a bit of a distraction for Cat Power's Chan Marshall to turn her attention to interpretation, but when she manages to wrench something as tired as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" into a realm of unrecognisability, that's something. Recalling Sinead O'Connor at her most intimate, Marshall would have to add a couple of instruments to qualify as spare here; one could disappear into the gaping holes of empty space. And other than the Stones, her choice of covers is interesting - a couple of Dylan tracks, Moby Grape, Velvet Underground, Nina Simone, Smog. But tellingly, the personality of her interpretations overwhelms them all, and she's left standing, alone and still lonely.
