Cardinals

'Farther Than Love' (album stream)

The members of Ontario trio Cardinals are purists, and they opted to record their album Farther Than Love in a single live-off-the-floor session. The album is out digitally on September 17, and it's available to stream ahead of time on Exclaim.ca.

The Niagara band laid down the eight-song album at B Town Sound in Burlington, ON, where they recorded without a metronome over nine hours on a single day.

According to a press release, "The concept of Farther Than Love was thought up in an extended rant about the state of current music. Being kids raised on Motown, soul and folk, Cardinals were growing ever tired with fake sounds and the copy paste tactics of modern pop acts."

Despite the album's speedy genesis, there's nothing hurried or messy-sounding about Farther Than Love, which mixes bouncy folk- and rock-flavoured cuts with soul-tinged pop vocals. It includes a slowed-down cover of the Beatles' "I've Just Seen a Face."

Stream the album below. The band will play at Kitchener's KOI Music Festival on September 14 and at Toronto's Dakota Tavern on October 15. Expect more Canadian dates to be confirmed soon.
