By Divine Right Pay Tribute to Depeche Mode's 'Speak & Spell' with Covers LP
By Divine Right leader José Contreras recently covered his own material on a solo album, and now his band are poised to take on the work of Depeche Mode. They will pay tribute to the synth-pop band's 1981 debut Speak & Spell by releasing a tribute album on Headless Owl Records this fall.

This tribute features the U.S. tracklist, rather than the UK version. The original album was Depeche Mode's only one with Vince Clarke, who wrote most of these songs before leaving the group to start up such acts as Yazoo and Erasure.

"Speak & Spell was one of the few records from the early '80s that I still listen to," Contreras said in a statement. "It's way more primitive and fun than the rest of Depeche Mode catalogue. Whenever I heard it, I always knew it would make a killer By Divine Right record. When Lysh and Geordie got into the record, without any prompting by me, it just seemed too good to be true. When the idea of actually recording it came up, we just all jumped at the chance to jam and track these songs. It was a blast. It was a blur."

As of yet, By Divine Right's cover album does not have a firm release date.
