Braids Offshoot Gremlins Release Debut EP, Video

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 29, 2012

Braids formed in Calgary and are now based out of Montreal, but keyboardist Katie Lee has evidently been spending some of her time in South Carolina, where she formed a band called Gremlins with Toro y Moi live member Patrick Jeffords.

The group also includes Sam Ray of Ricky Eat Acid, as well as Mat Cothran of Coma Cinema and Elvis Depressedly. And while not much is known about the group other than their lineup, they have already released their debut EP. The five-track self-titled collection is up on Bandcamp, and it finds the musicians dabbling in a mellow, groove-heavy brand of electro-tinged psych pop (which sounds a hell of a lot closer to Toro y Moi than it does Braids).

The collection was recorded in the second half of 2011 in Columbia, SC, with producers Page Chilton and Matt Morrison. This means that recording took place a few months after Toro y Moi and Braids toured together, which we're guessing isn't a coincidence.
