A working relationship between Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Kanye West was once something listeners would scratch their heads at, though it paid dividends on West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Yeezus. But ever since West strapped that godawful red ball cap to his head, things between the two haven't been the same.
In a new profile with Pitchfork, Vernon recalled a time when West took over his studio and property on the outskirts of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, for an entire week while recording The Life of Pablo in 2014. Vernon recalled appearances by Arcade Fire's Win Butler, Common and Kendrick Lamar, and some "wild" three-on-three basketball games.

Vernon and Kanye's idea of how to run a highly collaborative recording session may be the same, but they have drifted apart in their politics. "I can't really kick it with him anymore on a personal level, just the energy," Vernon tells me, diplomatically. "But I've got mad love for him, and we're still friends." As opposed to Kanye's infamous Trump worship, Vernon is more attracted to the progressive ideologies of Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren.
