Björk

The Inner or Deep Part of An Animal or Plant Structure

BY James KeastPublished Nov 1, 2004

This 50-minute making-of documentary should provide some insight into Björk's latest album-length experiment, Medulla, constructed entirely out of sounds derived from the human voice. But it doesn't; not really. It does however reinforce the initial impression that the album is something to be admired more than enjoyed — even the Icelandic genius herself seems much more interested in process than in the end result, as she conducts contributions from the likes of Mike Patton and the Roots' beat-boxer Rahzel. The in-studio footage is pretty cool, but the doc is pretty sloppy and the few hints at insight get lost in short attention spans. (Atlantic/Warner)
