In 2013, Kranky released the fourth full-length album by ambient experimentalist Thomas Meluch under the name Benoît Pioulard. Met with much love, Hymnal is now set to receive the remix treatment care of Lost Tribe Sound, which has roped in noted artists such as Loscil, Cock & Swan, the Remote Viewer and William Ryan Fritch to deliver their takes on Pioulard's music.
Lost Tribe will release Hymnal Remixes on January 21 and will spread 19 remixes over the course of two discs. The double-disc album comes housed in a Japanese style digi-wallet made of "extra heavy uncoated stock with matte disc artwork" and is limited to 450 copies.
Of the remix album, the label explains: "The collection is loosely split in half by stylistic direction, the more rhythm-oriented first disc balanced by the ambient leanings of the second. Each entry is a unique study of its original version, and together they create a multifaceted and radiant whole."
For a taste of what's in store, Exclaim! is premiering the remix of "Censer" by Segue, whose version takes the raw material of the original and stretches it out into a more thoughtfully relaxed arrangement, with a deep dub sub-base rhythm humming away underneath.
