Bahamas Gets Members of D'Angelo's Band for 'Earthtones' LP, Shares New Single

Afie Jurvanen says the new record was inspired by Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West

Toronto-based singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen will return with his latest Bahamas record early next year. Titled Earthtones, the album will arrive on January 19 via Brushfire/Republic Records.

It marks the follow-up to 2014's Bahamas Is Afie, though in the meantime, he's also worked on records with the likes of the Weather Station, Jason Collett and Fred Penner.

Earthtones was recorded over the course of three days and hears Jurvanen playing alongside James Gadson and Pino Palladino, who have worked with Beck and John Mayer, respectively. Both musicians also played as part of the Vanguard on D'Angelo's acclaimed 2014 record Black Messiah. it was produced by Jurvanen's long-time manager Robbie Lackritz.

UPDATE (10/27, 11 a.m. EDT): Full album details have now arrived. See the album artwork pictured above, and find the tracklisting down below. Bahamas has also unveiled a string of North American tour dates for the new year. See all the upcoming shows below.

In a statement about the new album, Jurvanen said: "I wrote songs about having success, having kids, and having depression. I wrote songs about going on tour, going back in time and going in circles. I wrote songs about my other worldly wife, my jerk dad and my garbage relationship with my brother. Crazy right?!"

In a new interview with Billboard, Jurvanen cites Black Messiah as one of his most influential records in the last few years, but also points to Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and Kanye West as creative touchstones.

Despite the heavy hip-hop inspirations behind the record, the first single "No Wrong" keeps pretty in line with the folksy soul sound we've come to expect from Bahamas.

"The verses are all little snapshots about struggling with the day-to-day of my life," he told Billboard, speaking about the new song. "The verses are that struggle, and then you get to the chorus and it's like 'I can do, I can do no wrong.' I get to hang out with my buddies and play music, go swimming and eat French fries. Compared to a lot of the awful stuff that's going on the world, most days I feel pretty good."
