'Bahamas Is Afie' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 11, 2014

Bahamas songwriter Afie Jurvanen is known for his laid-back vibes and impressive guitar chops, and on those counts — and others — his new album Bahamas Is Afie doesn't disappoint. To hear for yourself, you can now stream the album in full on Exclaim.ca.

The collection begins with the folksy campfire strums of "Waves," and the tune takes a soulful turn with the entrance of a relaxed groove and backing harmonies. This sets the tone for the chilled-out collection, on which Jurvanen's guitar work is subtle and tasteful while still exhibiting his raw talent. He employs a fried tone for his slide solo on "All the Time," while "Stronger Than That" keeps things smooth and slippery, and "All Time Favourite" features nimble acoustic work.

The songwriter said in a statement, "I really thought I was going to make a traditional folk record but as the recording evolved I started having some pretty different ideas. I started playing this game like, 'What would '80s Van Morrison do if he were producing this?' or 'What about John Williams?' It all came together in a simple, naive and direct way and I was really energized by the process."

Check out the results below. The album drops on August 19 through Brushfire/Universal.

As previously reported, Bahamas has a lengthy North American tour ahead of himself, and you can see all the dates here.
