@ Announce New EP 'Are You There, God? It's Me, @,' Share New Song "Soul Hole"

The Philadelphia/Baltimore psychedelic folk duo @ re-released their excellent debut album Mind Palace Music this year, and they're following it up with an EP of electronic excursions called Are You There, God? It's Me, @, arriving January 12 on Carpark

The duo — Philly's Victoria Rose and Baltimore's Stone Filipczak — are previewing the EP with the buzzy "Soul Hole," which abandons the duo's medieval-lite freak folk for some harsh, shapeshifting digital pop.

"The vocal loop of this song was found as a recording which I have no recollection of making," Rose said in a statement about the track. "It was quantized and developed into a track about going to the 'Soul Hole,' a place where worldly desires and materiality do not exist."

On their Bandcamp page, the band "confesses the departure from their usual sound may only be temporary, it's an exciting listen full of twists and turns that surprised even themselves."

"We're both really dramatic in our musical sensibilities and don't shy away from ridiculous choices," Rose wrote. "Which can really be exaggerated when working mostly with electronic sounds."

The song comes attached to a bananas video courtesy of director/animator Devon Voelkel and CG artist Patrick Nugent. You'll have to watch for yourself, but it seems generally to be about a dude who's boning worms in an alternate dimension called Car World?

Here's Voelkel's description of the video:

The music video for "Soul Hole" tries to answer the simple question: "What is Car World?"

Car World is a community-led organization for the greater good, on a mission to rescue the Attendants — an alien species in an alternate universe. This mission is headed by William Banks, a Brooklyn comedian and the to-be saviour of Car World (which is Earth World in Arm Universe). Most further questions can be answered in video, which does its best to cover the broad strokes of Car World, its mission, and its origin.

We were also lucky enough to use the power of computer graphics to create the most realistic depiction to date of William's journey to Car World, and what it might have been like to be there.

As the Leader of Car World Philadelphia, it has been an honour.
