Ariana Grande Opens Up About Relationships with Mac Miller and Pete Davidson in 'Vogue' Interview
Ariana Grande is famously candid with her fans on social media, but in the new Vogue cover story, she publicly confronts questions about the last couple years that she's been understandably quiet about until now.
In addition to opening up about her ongoing post-Manchester attack healing process, the thank u, next singer shed new light on her past headline-grabbing relationships with Mac Miller and Pete Davidson. She also took the opportunity to release the new music video "in my head," which you can watch below.
Obviously still raw from Miller's passing last year, Grande gave some context behind her memorable clap-back at a random Twitter guy for blaming Miller's DUI and addiction issues on their breakup.
"People don't see any of the real stuff that happens, so they are loud about what they think happened," she told Vogue. "They didn't see the years of work and fighting and trying, or the love and exhaustion. That tweet came from a place of complete defeat, and you have no idea how many times I warned him that that would happen and fought that fight, for how many years of our friendship, of our relationship. You have no idea so you're not allowed to pull that card, because you don't fucking know. That's where that came from."
Grande described her grief over Miller's death as "all-consuming," but despite giving some insight into the difficult dynamic between them, she still looks back exceptionally fondly on the relationship they had.
"By no means was what we had perfect, but, like, fuck. He was the best person ever, and he didn't deserve the demons he had," she said. "I was the glue for such a long time, and I found myself becoming... less and less sticky. The pieces just started to float away."
Grande also spoke about the summer after her breakup with Miller in New York, where she met and got engaged to Pete Davidson almost instantly.
"My friends were like, 'Come! We're gonna have a fun summer.' And then I met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction," Grande explained. "It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic, and I loved him, and I didn't know him. I'm like an infant when it comes to real life and this old soul, been-around-the-block-a-million-times artist. I still don't trust myself with the life stuff."
Despite everyone's fixation on her romantic relationships, Grande is still taking the message from "thank u, next" to heart and working on her relationship with herself.
"I have this idea of what I'd like to be," she said. "I can see this stronger, amazing, fearless version of myself that one day I hope to evolve into. Sometimes I try to be that for my fans before I actually am that myself."
