Ancient Ocean

'Blood Moon'

John Bohannon crafts ambient electronic music under his Ancient Ocean moniker, and he's set to drop his debut record Blood Moon next week. Before it arrives, though, Exclaim! is giving you the chance to hear it in its entirety right now.

The Brooklyn-based musician's new effort offers up four uniquely captivating compositions that highlight his ability to manipulate sounds. Bohannon builds layers of familiar sounds like guitars and synths, combined with more unusual instrumentation like bowed banjo and process piano into psychedelic soundscapes.

A press release notes that the full-length format gave Bohannon "room to stretch out and fully realize his sprawling, expansive creations." The LP opens with the title track, which gets some assistance from Jonas Reinhardt and Mark Demolar (of Woodsman) and takes the listener on a spacey sonic journey.

"Beargrass Creek" hears contributions from Aaron Martin and Craig Schenker, as well as JS Aurelius of noise-rockers Destruction Unit — though it's not immediately obvious given the dark, slow but soothing nature of the piece. "Absolution," meanwhile, delves even deeper and darker into Bohannon's musical psyche, presenting an eerie, droning 11-minute number. Finally, "Winter Half – Light" opens as a sparse and spacious soundscape that slowly grows louder and warmer before bringing the LP to an end.

You can experience Blood Moon in its entirety right now, before it officially arrives on June 30 through Beyond Beyond Is Beyond. Give it a listen below.
