Up until today, KiSS 104.9 FM was a Vancouver pop and soft rock station, but it went seriously haywire yesterday by playing an hours-long loop of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name Of."
It's unclear exactly why this took place, although it appears to be part of a format change. The day before the incident, on June 28, morning hosts Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu announced that it was their final day on the air at KiSS. Today, the radio station is off the air and has been replaced on the dial by SONiC - The New Alternative — an alt-rock station playing in Vancouver (104.9), Abbotsford (92.5) and Chilliwack (107.5).
Some initially interpreted yesterday's RATM marathon as an act of rebellion by the station's programmers, who were angry about the firing of Lim and Sidhu and intentionally sabotaging the station by playing a song that repeats the phrase "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me." Others speculated that it might be a publicity stunt signalling a format change.
The latter theory has seemingly been confirmed by the launch of SONiC. The station's promo video (below) declares, "Being different is how we stand out." Certainly, the station is doing a very good job of standing out so far, as the stunt has gone viral. Whoever runs SONiC's Twitter account has been bantering with commenters about Rage Against the Machine.
