33 1/3 Reveals Its Longlist of Proposed Books

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Jan 13, 2009

Following a call for authors late last year, the 33 1/3 books series has announced its new longlist of proposals, which holds a few surprising pitches.

Among the 597 proposals for future in-depth album analysis, you'll find more pop-oriented picks than you'd likely expect, such as Blackout by Britney Spears, that Chris Gaines album by Garth Brooks, Fall Out Boy's From Under the Cork Tree, the Eagles' Greatest Hits and 808s and Heartbreak by Kanye West.

Of course, there are a lot of more obscuro music nerd-type selections included as well, such as Arthur Russell's World of Echo, the Microphones' The Glow Pt. 2, Jon Brion's Meaningless, Submarine Bells by the Chills and Slint's Spiderland. And there are several pitches that are surprising because they actually aren't part of 33 1/3 series already, like the Zombies' Odessey and Oracle, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Talking Heads' Fear of Music, Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express and Gang of Four's Entertainment!.

The 33 1/3's blog asks, "Make what you will of this list - a snapshot of the interests of contemporary music critics? Some cunning ploys to get a book published? Or is it just utterly random?"

Whatever the list actually means, the proposals are to be narrowed down to a shortlist of 100 or so, and eventually several of those may actually become a book one day.
