The Simpsons has poked fun at the sport of hockey over the years, but they've yet to have a real player guest on the show. That'll change next month, when NHL legend Wayne Gretzky stops by Springfield.

According to NHL.com, Gretzky will pop by the show in an episode that's set to air on December 11.

Speaking with the site, The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said, "We reached out to him. We were looking for heroes of the winter like Santa Claus and Jack Frost, and there couldn't be a bigger hockey hero than Wayne Gretzky.

"People argue about a lot of things, but they never argue about who's the greatest hockey player. It's always him," Jean continued. "I don't think there is anybody better at anything that Gretzky is as a hockey player. He had a lot of great stories and it was a real pleasure to meet him."

Gretzky recorded his Simpsons voice-over earlier this year.
