James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar sequel is finally on its way this year, and the filmmaker is giving us our first look at the follow-up to 2009's original with a new teaser trailer.

With returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, as well as new cast members Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell and Oona Chaplin, the second film in the five-chapter series will arrive on December 16, 2022.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water will follow Worthington's Jake Sully and Saldana's Na'vi Neytiri and their family on Pandora, where new whale-like animals the flying Toruk creatures roam.

Along with the new teaser, plans for Avatar's subsequent chapters have also started being fleshed out, with Avatar 3 slated for 2024 release. Cameron filmed 2 and 3 subsequently, mixing shooting schedules together "based on the types of scenes and the environment," he revealed in conversation with Denis Villeneuve for Variety's Directors on Directors interview series in 2021. The fourth and fifth installments are also rumoured to have begun production, and, as previously reported, are due for release in 2026 and 2028, respectively.

Produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, Avatar: The Way of Water credits executive producers Peter M. Tobyansen and David Valdes and associate producer Brigitte Yorke.
