U2, Niall Horan, Saoirse Ronan Speak Out on Irish Referendum to Repeal Anti-Abortion Laws

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 25, 2018

A number of stars have taken to social media to weigh in on the history-making referendum taking place in Ireland today. The Irish people will decide whether or not to repeal the 8th amendment — a constitutional clause that essentially outlaws abortion in almost all cases.

Expats from around the world have been returning to their homeland in droves to cast their votes, while anti-abortion Americans have also been travelling to the country to stage protests (despite being pelted with eggs).

If the 8th amendment is repealed, the Irish government will create legislation that allows abortions up to 12 weeks after gestation, or up to 24 weeks if the woman's health is seriously at risk.

Saoirse Ronan, Cillian Murphy, Aisling Bea and others recently appeared in a video backing the repeal of the 8th amendment. Watch the clip below.
