Tony Hawk's Life and Skateboarding Career to Be the Focus of New Documentary
Filmmaker-photographer Sam Jones will helm the project
Published Aug 03, 2021Tony Hawk is inarguably the world's most famous skateboarder, and now he's getting his own documentary explaining just how that happened.
Variety reports that the as-yet-untitled film directed by filmmaker-photographer Sam Jones — known for music docs like 2002's I Am Trying to Break Your Heart and 2014's Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued — will tell the story of Hawk's life and career, with further details yet to be unveiled.
"We have already shot everything for it, it's just in the editing process," Hawk said, explaining his own involvement in the film's creation. "I definitely wanted to give them as much footage and interview as possible."
The documentary is anticipated to debut on the fall festival circuit before a wider release in 2022. The Duplass brothers are on board to produce.
It's been a big year for the newly-minted Olympic sport, with a handful of new stars like 13-year old Brazilian competitor Rayssa Leal (who went viral in 2015 when Hawk himself posted a video of her skating) making names for themselves on the world stage.
