"If you build it, they will come." That famous quote will be put the test next year, since there's going to be an actual Major League Baseball game at the location of Field of Dreams.
The beloved 1989 baseball movie, starring Kevin Costner, is about a man who clears a baseball field in an Iowa cornfield. That site in Dubuque County, Iowa, has since become a tourist destination; on August 13 of 2020, it will be the site of a regular season MLB game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. This will be the first-ever MLB game in Iowa.
To be clear — the game won't actually be played in a clearing on a cornfield. Rather, the MLB will construct a temporary stadium at the Dyersville farm site to hold 8,000 fans. The design of the park is based on the White Sox's old stadium, Comiskey Park. It will include windows in the right-field fence to offer a view of the iconic cornfields where the movie was filmed.
That's a rendering of what the stadium will look like above. There's no word on if the spirit of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson — a Chicago White Sox player from the early 1900s, who features heavily in the movie — will show up.
"As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of Field of Dreams," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "We look forward to celebrating the movie's enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa."
