David Simon — the creator of basically the most respected TV show ever The Wire — has announced his latest project. Once again, Simon is teaming up with HBO for a show called We Own the City.
The series will find Simon teaming back up with producer George Pelecanos, and the show will be based on the book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by investigative journalist Justin Fenton.
As Deadline lays out, Simon and Pelecanos are both writing and executive producing We Own the City, with Kary Antholis also executive producing through his Crime Story Media.
Like The Wire, We Own the City will be set in Baltimore, this time in 2015 following the death of Freddie Gray. The 25-year-old Black man died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody, sparking riots throughout Baltimore.
We Own the City is also set at time when Baltimore saw its murder count reach a record high, with drug and gun crimes skyrocketing in the city. This led the city to not only launch a federal investigation into Gray's death, but also the rise of the now-infamous Sergeant Wayne Jenkins and his unit of plainclothes officers called the Gun Trace Task Force.
Eventually, Jenkins was accused of stealing thousands of dollars from Baltimore citizens by skimming from drug busts, pocketing money found in homes and other dirty deeds. While these crimes initially went unchecked, Jenkins is now in prison.
In other words, if you have wanted Simon to make another series like The Wire, you're dreams are finally coming true.
Unfortunately, HBO has yet to reveal a release date for We Own the City, but stay tuned.
