In the wake of Sharon Osbourne expressing her support for Piers Morgan following his departure from ITV's Good Morning Britain over his insensitive comments about Meghan Markle, CBS's The Talk has gone on hiatus while the network conducts an internal review of Osbourne's controversial remarks.
The Talk's episode, which aired last Wednesday (March 10), featured a heated conversation between host Sheryl Underwood and Osbourne, who came to blows over whether Morgan's comments on GMB — about Markle's experience with the royal family and her mental health issues that led her to contemplate suicide — were racist or not.
In the episode, Underwood asked Osbourne: "What would you say to people who may feel that while you're standing by your friend, it appears you gave validation or safe haven to something that he has uttered that is racist, even if you don't agree?"
Osbourne responded: "Educate me, tell me when you have heard [Piers Morgan] say racist things? I very much feel like I'm about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend, who many people think is a racist, so that makes me a racist?"
After some reflection, Osbourne issued a statement on Friday (March 12), apologizing for her behaviour, but CBS has nonetheless opted to forego today and tomorrow's episodes while the issue is under review.
The network wrote in a statement: "We are committed to a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace. All matters related to the Wednesday episode of The Talk are currently under internal review."
The Talk is expected to resume filming on Wednesday (March 17).
