Stephen Kijak has made music-minded films like Stones in Exile and We Are X, and now he's preparing to release his latest musical movie project. He's celebrating the Smiths by directing the upcoming coming-of-age dramedy Shoplifters of the World.

The film is set in Denver in 1987, when a group of teenage Smiths superfans learn that their favourite band have broken up. From there, it plays out a bit like the plot of 1994's Airheads, as one of the kids hijacks a radio station and forces the DJ to play the Smiths all night. Suffice to say, these shoplifters of the world unite and take over.

Watch the trailer below. The film is coming out on April 2 through Pacific Northwest Pictures, and it features 20 songs from the Smiths in the soundtrack.
