After numerous false starts, New Zealand director Taika Waititi finally got the green light on the long-awaited live-action Akira remake. Now, however, production on the project has been pushed back — and Marvel movies are to blame.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi has signed a deal to write and direct the fourth Thor movie, a follow-up to his beloved project Thor: Ragnarok.
That's great news for Thor fans, but it means Warner Bros. has supposedly put the Akira project on hold indefinitely. According to several sources, the hope is to have Waititi direct the Akira reboot when he finishes Thor.
The Akira reboot had previously received a release date of May 21, 2021. It was fast-tracked into production after receiving an enormous $18.5 million USD tax credit from the state of California under the agreement that it would begin production this year.
Taika Waititi's next project is Jojo Rabbit, which opens on October 18.
