Unlike the rest of us, Steven Soderbergh hasn't spent his social isolation time building an Animal Crossing island between constant Uber Eats deliveries. Instead, the singular writer-director has penned a follow-up to his breakthrough film Sex, Lies & Videotapes.
In a remote interview with the YouTube show Flaviar's NightCap Live, Soderbergh said he's actually written three screenplays while quarantining.
"When the lockdown happened here in New York in order to stay organized and sane, I decided I'm going to write," he said. "So within the first six or secen weeks of the lockdown, I finished three screenplays. One of them was a rewrite, one of them was an original, and one was an adaptation of a novel that I've been wanting to do."
He concluded, "The original was a sequel to Sex, Lies, and Videotape. It was an idea that had been circling for a while, and I felt like I came up with the way to get back in, and so I wrote it, and I want to make it."
Making a sequel to the film is an absolute no-brainer, as the movie pushed Soderbergh onto the global stage after winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1989. No other details are available so far about the sequel, but we should certainly expect this to happen at some point.
Soderbergh has also been in the news throughout the coronavirus pandemic because he basically predicted the whole thing with his 2011 film Contagion.
