'Star Wars' Movies Are Going on "a Bit of a Hiatus" After This Year

The ninth film in the series will be the last for a while

On December 20, the ninth official Star Wars film will finally be released. The film, which does not have a title just yet, marks the end of what has been dubbed "the Skywalker saga." It's also, apparently, the end of Star Wars films for a while.

In a new interview with Bloomberg, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the company is planning to take a break after Episode IX hits theatres.

"We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter," Iger said. "There are movies in development, but we have not announced them."

That said, don't expect the movies to be announced any time soon after the Skywalker saga concludes.

"We will take a pause, some time, and reset," he added, "because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Stars Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus."

UPDATE (412, 1:50 p.m. EDT): Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker has now been officially announced, and you can watch a trailer for it over here.

The latest string of Star Wars films started strong but began to lag in recent years with films like Solo and Rogue One underperforming at the box office. Films like a reported Boba Fett spinoff had already been shelved before Iger made his announcement today.

That said, there are plenty of Star Wars projects in the works, including a variety of television projects and, of course, the Star Wars-themed parks at Disney resorts, which are set to open this year.
