One of the many issues facing millions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic is how they will pay for their housing now that they're out of work. In an effort to draw attention to the issue while also paying tribute to his late grandmother, Saturday Night Live comedian Michael Che has announced he's paying one month's rent for all 160 units in a New York public housing residence.
Che's grandmother died of coronavirus last week. In her honour, he plans to pay the rent for the entirety of her building. It's unclear where she lives, but Che made the announcement in an Instagram post.
"It's crazy to me that residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many New Yorkers can't even work," he wrote. "I know that's just a drop in the bucket. So I really hope the city has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing, AT THE VERY LEAST."
