Shannen Doherty, the actress who got her breakthrough on Beverly Hills 90210, has revealed that she has stage 4 breast cancer.

The 48-year-old shared her diagnosis during an interview on Good Morning America today.

"It's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I have stage 4," she said. "So my cancer came back and that's why I'm here."

Doherty said she decided to go public with the latest diagnosis because court filings for with a legal battle with an insurance company over fire damage to her home will be released this week, and they contain her stage 4 status.

Doherty was previously diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, but the actress announced she was in remission in 2017.

Last year, Doherty revealed that the cancer had returned. She was battling it last year while filming for the reboot of Beverly Hills 90210 and when her former co-star Luke Perry suddenly died.

"It was so weird for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was seemingly healthy to go first," she told ABC. "It was really shocking and the least I could do to honour him was do that show. I still haven't done enough in my opinion."

Doherty also appeared in an episode of Riverdale, paying homage to Perry.

"I don't think that I've processed it," she continued. "It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways. I definitely have days where I say, 'Why me?' And then I go, 'Well why not me? Who else? Who else beside me deserves this?' None of us do. I would say that my first reaction is always concern about how am I going to tell my mom, my husband."
