Late last year, director Matt Reeves shared that Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne in The Batman was heavily inspired by Kurt Cobain, if the first trailer's soundtrack didn't give it away. For all the "emo" characterizations of his caped crusader, it turns out Pattinson's time in the batsuit led him to another genre entirely: ambient electronic.
A new profile in GQ chronicles the delays that befell production of The Batman, stretching the film's shoot to 18 months — Pattinson's "very embarrassing" COVID-19 positive test result among them. The star shared that when the film resumed production, the set became a "bubble within a bubble" in hopes of avoiding further pandemic delays.
"The nature of the shoot was so kind of insular, always shooting at night, just really dark all the time, and I felt very much alone," Pattinson recalled, adding, "Even just being in the suit all the time. You're not really allowed out of the studio with the suit on, so I barely knew what was going on at all outside."
So what is a caped crusader to do when he's trapped indoors, in costume, for extended periods of time? According to the profile, producers built Pattinson "a little tent off to the side of the set where he could go to decompress," which became his makeshift recording studio.
"I'd be in the tent just making ambient electronic music in the suit, looking over the cowl. There's something about the construction of the cowl that makes it very difficult to read books, so you have to kind of almost lean forward to see out of the cowl."
As for what a cowl is, Pattinson explained, "The mask thing. The bat mask. The cowl! ... I kept calling it a mask. But I learned, no, no, it's the cowl."
While it remains to be seen if The Batman set sessions will ever see the light of day, Pattinson reportedly laughed "maniacally" in reflecting on his hours of darkness. "I mean, I was really, really, really dead afterward. I just looked at a photo of myself from April and I looked green."
