Questlove to Executive Produce J Dilla Documentary
Adapted from Dan Charnas' book, 'Dilla Time' will be "part biography, part musicology, and part musical meditation"
Published Sep 22, 2022The venerable late hip-hop producer J Dilla's life and legacy will be celebrated and explored in an upcoming feature documentary film executive produced by Questlove.
Adapted from Dan Charnas' recent book Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm, the doc — likewise titled Dilla Time — will be "part biography, part musicology, and part musical meditation."
The Roots drummer will once again team up with Joseph Patel, who produced Summer of Soul — one of Exclaim!'s Best Films of 2021. Patel will co-direct alongside Darby Wheeler. The film is being made in cooperation with J Dilla's estate and will be produced by Two One Five Entertainment, Patel, Charnas and Scenario Media.
"Explaining musical genius is my mission," Questlove said in a press release. "To be able to tell the world about the musician that had the most influence on me is a dream come true. Not just on me, but on an entire generation of musicians that everyone knows and loves. J Dilla was our teacher. And what he taught us was how to feel rhythm in a way we had never felt before. I'm so honoured to be a part of bringing his story to the world through this documentary."
Following his Oscar-winning directorial debut, Questlove has also been working on a Sly Stone documentary. Earlier this year, Summer of Soul inspired the founding of a new festival in Harlem.
