Piracy Search Site Torrentz Ceases Operation

Will 2016 go down in history as the year that torrenting ended? It's starting to look that way, as more and more sites cease operation. Last month, it was KickassTorrents that got the boot. Up next, popular torrent search engine Torrentz has decided to stop offering its services to the pirates of the world.

As Variety reports, a goodbye message was posted to the site. "Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines," it said. "Torrentz will always love you. Farewell."

Torrentz was the 186th most visited website in the entire world. According to a report from the MPAA, it was one of the most "notorious" sites for piracy. It boasted 15.8 million unique visitors in August 2015.

The site's domain was registered to the Poland-based Inventoris Sp. The site did not host illegal files. Instead, it served as an aggregating search engine of other torrent sites.
