Nicolas Winding Refn Talks 'The Neon Demon' Cast: "I Don't Like Men"

Some time next year, director Nicolas Winding Refn will return with The Neon Demon, his follow-up to 2013's extremely divisive Only God Forgives. The film stars Elle Fanning, Abbey Lee, Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote, Christina Hendricks and Keanu Reeves, and in a new interview Refn explains he was happy to work with female leads.

Speaking with Dazed [via Bloody Disgusting], Refn explained that he intentionally ditched the brooding, violent men of his other films. "I just made a film about women, with women protagonists… I decided that I'd made enough films about violent men, and I wanted to do a film with only women in the film....

"It was a great enjoyment. I actually… I don't like men, even though I've made a lot of films with men in them. I'm not a guy-guy. I don't really like hanging out with guys, I don't do guy stuff. I love women. I love anything feminine. I love pink, I love dolls, I only have daughters."

Rein's wife Liv Corfixen also told the magazine that the director took solace in the spiritual guidance of another beloved film auteur. "He was actually in a bad mood recently and very frustrated, as usual! I think he actually had a tarot reading like a week ago or something, by Alejandro (Jodorowsky) over the phone. Nicolas looked very happy afterwards, so that's good. He was depressed before and then he was happy. I think it was probably uplifting things."

The Neon Demon will arrive in 2016.
