Mike Flanagan — whose Netflix series The Midnight Club was just cancelled after one season — has announced that he'll be adapting Stephen King's The Dark Tower book series into a TV series.
As reported by Deadline, Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy contacted King directly with a detailed outline for the planned adaptation, which would include five seasons followed by two feature-length films. Flanagan has previously adapted King's Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep.
The deal was made before Flanagan made the jump from Netflix to Amazon, so it's unknown where the series will find its home, though Prime Video seems likely.
"If you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life," Flanagan told Deadline. "We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn't mean that they can't or won't get behind it at some point — you don't know. But that's something we've been developing ourselves and are really passionate about finally getting it up on its feet at some point."
The Dark Tower had previously been adapted into a 2017 film starring Idris Elba, but it was met with poor reviews (Exclaim! gave it 3/10), mostly focused on the attempt to condense the entire series into a single film. Five seasons and two movies might correct that issue!
