'Making a Murderer' to Return with Part 2 Next Month

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 25, 2018

More than two years ago, Netflix announced that Making a Murderer would be getting a second instalment, and the streaming service has finally revealed exactly when the hit crime documentary series will return. Making a Murderer Part 2 is due out on October 19.

The first season told the story of Steven Avery, who served 18 years in prison for the wrongful conviction of the sexual assault and attempted murder of a woman named Penny Beerntsten. He was finally exonerated in 2003, but was arrested in 2005 and convicted in 2007 for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Avery's nephew Brendan Dassey was also charged in the murder.

Since then, Dassey has been denied release from prison after appealing his conviction, while Avery was successful in demanding new scientific testing in his own case.

"Steven and Brendan, their families and their legal and investigative teams have once again graciously granted us access, giving us a window into the complex web of American criminal justice," executive producers, writers and directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos said in a statement. "Building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit."

Part 2 features 10 new episodes.
